Stuart resides and works in Seattle, WA. He studied painting and sculpture at St. Lawrence University from 1966 to 1970 before deciding to pursue a career in architecture and was admitted to the Yale School of Architecture in 1973. After receiving his master’s degree in 1976, he moved to Seattle and opened his practice in 1981. Stuart continued to paint and, in 1985, was awarded a NAUSI (Northwest Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies) fellowship to Rome, Italy. He continued his studies in drawing and painting at the Pratt Institute during the 1990s and 2000s. Since 2021, Stuart has devoted his energies to painting.
Stuart’s paintings feature bold and minimalist landscapes that evoke a surreal, dreamlike quality through their use of color and abstraction, which serve as universal meditations on color, space, and the experience of the land. They emphasize how the world feels rather than how it appears. Minimal foreground details and a sense of infinite space invite reflection on themes of memory, perception, and transformation, moving beyond the depiction of a particular place to evoke broader states of mind and feeling. Through abstraction and wide swaths of color, he can create bold, emotionally charged reinterpretations of space, color, and light.
Stuart explores the spiritual and curative powers of nature by eliminating the extraneous and focusing on suggestive forms. He aims to make connections that resonate with the viewer. He relies on observation, memory, and imagination to create work that straddles the boundaries of objectivity and abstraction.
Through the application of paint, including grounds, transparency, solidity, and various levels of gloss, he can create effects that enrich each painting.
